摘 要:《雾都孤儿》使英国作家查尔斯•狄更斯誉满全球,作者在作品中采用的象征手法贯穿始终的、无处不在,加强了作品的艺术效果。小说中的象征宛如一部黑白电影, 间或地点缀着几道明亮的色彩, 从而构成独特的艺术风格。其象征手法的运用对刻画人物、烘托主题起了举足轻重的作用,作品中的事物和人物等均被赋予了特殊的象征意义。本文首先分析《雾都孤儿》中象征手法的不可或缺性,然后从小说中主要人物的人名寓意和一些特定对象体现的象征意义着手分析,最后讨论此小说采用象征手法的原因,从而研究《雾都孤儿》中的象征手法。

Abstract: Oliver Twist makes the English writer Charles Dickens well-known all around the world. Dickens uses the symbolism so skillful which enhances the artistic effects of his work greatly. Symbolism just like a black and white movie embellishes a few bright colors occasionally and forms a unique art style. The application of symbolism plays a decisive role in the presentation of the characters and theme. The object and character in the work are all given special symbolic meanings. This paper researches the symbolism in this novel from the following aspects: the dispensability of symbolism to Oliver Twist; the symbolic meaning of the names of the characters and some specific objects; the factors of adopting symbolism. All these make the symbolism clear to the readers.
