强大的系统功能 ERP除了能够实现MRPII的原有功能（制造、仓储、供销、财务等）以外，管理上更加适应企业多地点、多工厂、多国家生产经营的趋势，覆盖到多工厂管理、质量管理、实验室管理、设备维修管理、运输管理、过程控制接口、数据采集接口、电子通信、法规与标准、项目管理、金融投资管理、市场信息管理等等几乎企业运营的所有领域。
通过系统的应用自动协调各部门的业务，使企业的资源得到统一规划和运用，降低库存，加快资金周转的速度，将各部门连成一个富有团队精神的整体，协调运作。
在ERP系统中，生产计划是核心的部分。ERP的发展历史经历MRP，闭环MRP，MRP II等几个阶段。而ERP系统是扩展了管理信息集成的范围，除财务、分销和生产管理以外，还集成了企业的其他管理功能，如人力资源、质量管理、决策支持等多种功能，并支持国际互联网、企业内部网、外部网和电子商务等等。
